“Happiness….. does anyone know what it is?” -Marilyn Monroe from Netflix
I always have had this fascination and admiration towards Marilyn Monroe. I personally have a collection of magazines solely about Marilyn Monroe’s life and death and I have read it million times over. She is more than just a star and a Hollywood diva to me, she had this magnificent talent and wit, she was struggling mentally and people have missed to see that instead they saw her as this pin-up girl with gorgeous body. Marilyn Monroe struggled in a lot of ways and the people that have surrounded her then failed to see it. It is painful to know that her death was or will never be given any justice because of how it was given conclusion to. I have been personally been following, reading, and researching Marilyn Monroe because of admiration, her talent, her beauty is beyond compare that it is hard not to notice her right away. There have been several documentaries and movie autobiographies about her life that I have seen but this one specifically stands out for me and I swear I wont forget because it gave me a different insight on Marilyn’s life. Nobody will be like her and we have lost her forever.
The documentary first talked about Marilyn’s tragic life most of us knows, that she’s an orphan due to her mother being mentally ill for years, her incapability to raise a child due to her condition have gotten Marilyn to be under foster care after foster care for years until she was well aged enough to be a wife which was her only way out of being in a foster care. She was a loving and devoted wife to her husband then but she had dreams outside of the four walls of being a wife. She pursued her dreams of being a model at first until she have figured out that what she really wanted was to be an actress. The road to Hollywood then, as we all know is not as easy as how it sounds like, the Golden Era of Hollywood was well, full of ignorants then, money-hungry Men. Marilyn Monroe did not think twice though, she believed in herself that she could and she did, she never once doubted herself of becoming “That” girl and she was able to. She was determined and she had walked the rough roads of Hollywood barefoot despite of it being full of sticks and stones. The documentary portrayed Marilyn as this successful actress who have conquered it, delighted by all of her achievements and passionate about what she wanted.
It is hard not to be noticed by men if you have a beauty just like hers. With Marilyn Monroe’s natural seductiveness and wit she was able to capture mens hearts easily. One of them was Joe DiMaggio, her second husband who is a baseball player but their marriage did not last that long either because of the violence Marilyn have gone through during their marriage. Although they both loved each other dearly, the way I see it is that it did not work because it simply happened at such a wrong time. Marilyn then still have dreams of becoming bigger in Hollywood and Joe is not up for it he wanted a wife who is available to be by his side most of the times. Few years later came along Arthur Miller in Marilyn’s life, the next husband who was a playwright and according to this documentary was a communist. This is where I got all intrigued. Of all the magazines, books, and other documentaries I have watched, I don’t remember anybody every mentioned Arthur as a supporter of communism. It got me all thinking though that the theory of Marilyn being part of the communism is not that hard to believe because she could have been influenced by her husband. Although it may not also be true, the proofs this documentary provided showed just how much as this could be a possibility. And just like Marilyn’s other husbands, Marilyn’s marriage with Arthur did not last that long either. Then lastly, just before she passed away or maybe this is one of the reasons of her passing who knows, her connection with the Kennedy Brothers Jack and Robert Kennedy. The relationship between them were quite controversial and vague but I guess it is safe to say that they are Friends. The documentary tells a lot about the connection between the three and I would highly recommend it for those who are intrigued by it. All I could say about it is that what goes around comes back around indeed.
Relatively, this documentary is nothing different from other documentaries and autobiography movies, and magazines you see about Marilyn Monroe. This documentary is specifically showing us the different perspective, theories, and branches with proofs. I am pretty sure what the general public knows about her death is not entirely the truth and whatever that is, does anybody knows? How much of truths does the paper say? To me she is more than just a beautiful face, a gorgeous body, and a talented blonde, she is a person who was misunderstood, taken advantage of, and a victim of cruelty and stigma of having a mental illness not to mention the drugs she was into before and during which according to the autopsy was the reason of her untimely death. Marilyn Monroe, gone too soon, but she have left an exquisite life for her fans and supporters to remember forever, a part of history meant to be told throughout the next coming generations.
In part of my fascination to Marilyn Monroe, I will share to you some memorabilia I thought you would be interested to, some things just worth more than just the amount but of what it brings to you.
